Darren at Problogger points out that Google Adsense now allows publishers to post “Advertise Here” on their blogs. The thought being that Adsense advertisers can better direct their content, and that the publisher will be rewarded with higher rates. However, I’m not sure that it would help me substantially and there are several limitations.
Many bloggers are already using platforms such as BlogAds or Adbrite that allow this functionality. Furthermore, as I understand it, with those services the blogger sets the price and gets the money (after Blogads/Adbrite take their cut). With the Adsense version I don’t believe the publisher controls the price, and it falls under the bidding type system that is already in place. The main benefit would be that the ads designed for your site would crowd out lower paying, or less relevant ads.
The other issue is that many sports bloggers are their own ad networks, in that companies negotiate directly with the blogger for ad placement. At least in my case, this is my most lucrative revenue stream. I’m not sure that I want to give some of these potential advertisers an alternative where I get a fraction of the payment instead of the whole thing.
The other factor, is that while you can customize the landing page, each publisher is only allowed one landing page. So if for example, I wanted to try this on my Tiger blog and this blog, I’d have to pick one logo instead of having a seperate landing page for each. Now if you have only one blog, this isn’t an issue. However, for the blog network operators this could be a deterrant.
Publishers, is this something that you think you’ll use?
